Investigating Audio Production

Ambient Sound in and around my house

Ambient Sound also known as background sound is sounds within the background of a video or audio file. The most common ambient sounds are the peoples voices when out in public or vehicle noises such as cars, bikes, planes and boats or even the wind, rain, wave splashes or thunder. (Ambient sound/atmosphere sounds/atmos or background noise).

Diegetic And Non Diegetic Sound

Diegetic

Diegetic sound is any sound that emanates from the story world of a film. Diegetic sound can include everything from the voices of characters to the sounds of objects or music coming from a radio or an instrument-anything that exists in the story world. Any sound that could be heard by an actor while on set is a diegetic sound.

Non Diegetic

Non-diegetic sound is any sound in a film that doesn't originate from the world of the film. These are sounds that are added for effect in post-production like, a film soundtrack is almost always non-diegetic sound because the actors don't hear it. Most music that is used within films to create tension or a certain feeling is called underscore which is non-diegetic.

Panning

Panning helps to determine how wide the audio ends up sounding to the listener. We use it to create space in a mix or to enhance existing space or even create a more immersive musical experience for the audience.

Panning is used in most films, games and even some music in the 21st century. It is used for making people or certain sounds, sound as if they are coming from a certain direction. Like if you wanted to have an aeroplane fly over the listeners head you could pan the audio to go from left to right which when you are listening to it will sound as if the plane has just gone over the audiences head.

Foley

Foley is used to recreate sounds by mimicking them, like for horses walking we could tap coconuts together or one which is always brought up whenever foley is said is that celery is used to sound like breaking bones.

Foley has around 80 years of history, starting back when radio ruled supreme. Technology and media have grown since then, but the basics of Foley have remained very similar.

Foley is always recorded in a recording studio during the post production stage of any production where sound actors will synchronise the sounds they are producing with the picture of the film which will enhance the quality of the audio.

Elements Of Sound

The three main elements of sound are Dialogue, Music and Sound FX.

Music

Sound FX (ambient)

A successful advertisement will have the perfect fitting song for the product such as these:

Such as Foley

Dialogue(voice)

'Voice' can be seen as any sound produced by human beings as a result of air being forced from the lungs, through the voice box. This means that anything from a baby crying to Pavarotti singing can be counted as voice.

Within an advert voices can be used in all sorts of different ways you can have sped up voices, slowed down voices or you can have a crowd shouting or even multiple voices talking at once.

In an advert the producers might want to use Automatic Dialogue Replacement also know as ADR or Dubbing this is where an actor will come back in and re record their voice to produce a higher quality audio for the film/recording. This might be used within an advert incase there are any slip ups or unwanted background noise.

Voice FX

Basic Voice FX

This is my first attempt at at using basic SFX. I used a girls voice which Paul sent me and then I added a Voice Leveller which make the audio more level rather than having super loud parts and super quiet sections. I then added the FFT Filter and Full Reverb which you can change the amount of Echo and how many times it echos.

I enjoyed doing this because it has helped me learn the basic of Adobe Audition audio editing and means I can use this for future projects.

Pitch Shifting

In this video I did the same as the last one so the Voice Leveller but this time I used the "soft" preset and then I used the FFT Filter and the Full Reverb but then this time I used the Pitch Shifter which allows me to change the pitch/tone of the voice/sound so in this example I changed the pitch of a voice to make him sound like a demon.

I enjoyed learning how to use the pitch shifter within Audition because now I know how to alter/distort audio.

Delays And Echoes

In this video I used a mixture of the Voice Leveller but I used the "medium" preset this time and then I used the FFT Filter and then I introduced the Delay and Echo which allows me to add and echo and differ how delayed it is which means I can now make audio sound as if it is in a tunnel or a big hall.

I enjoyed learning this as I could definitely use this within my radio advert to create some sort of an atmosphere as if there is a crowd.
